Antigone The Significance of Historical Setting Desiree's Baby, by Kate Chopin, is not only a story about a mother and her child, but one of hatred and prejudices during the time in which they lived. Armand Aubigny, not knowing the origin of Desiree, fell madly in love with her as quick as a pistol shot. They were married immediately and soon after Desiree gave birth to a baby. Unfortunately, as the baby grew older, a particular feature stood out which changed the attitude of Armand towards Desiree and the baby. Armand decided, almost as quickly as he fell in love, that he no longer loved Desiree and their baby due to a racial barrier. The story is set in the 1800s when colonization in America was flourishing and slavery was a part of everyday life. Blacks were still referred to as ?negroes? and picked cotton on plantations, while their masters/employers led an ?easy-going and indulgent life.? Although, it is not clear if the story took place while slavery prevailed or just after the abolishment of slavery, for the mind set of the people was extremely prejudice, even after the integration of the different races. The Deep South, in which the story took place, was especially close minded towards the black race and interracial relationships were more or less a sin. White men were the dominant figures of society and had a dominant role in the family life. Armand took care of his family until he noticed that the baby's ethnicity was not entirely white, then he disowned Desiree and the baby by telling her to leave. This incident paralleled the mind set of the white man in the 1800s, where if a black slave did not satisfy his master in any way, he would have been lynched or kicked off the plantation with no other reason than being unsatisfactory. Desiree was rejected by her husband who thought she wasn't of white decent, when, in fact, it was Armand who ?belonged to the race that is cursed with the brand of slavery.? His ignorance led to the death of a woman he once loved and his interracial son. Because of color, people of the Deep South were treated like animals rather than equal human beings. During this era, blacks served as scapegoats to all of the mishaps and problems that occurred in the society; thus Desiree's baby was an outcast in the society dominated by the white race and was better off with his mother. When alone, Claudius speaks of his conscience and guilt. Hamlet enters from behind and draws his sword to kill Claudius but decides that it would be wrong to kill a man while praying. Act 3, Scene 4 Hamlet is about to  reveal Claudius’ villainy to Gertrude when he hears someone behind the curtain. Hamlet thinks it is Claudius and thrusts his sword through the arras – he has killed Polonius. Hamlet reveals all and speaks to the ghost. Gertrude, who cannot see the apparition, is now convinced of Hamlet’s madness. Wrapping Up Now that youve read the guide, review the plot points. What did you learn about the characters? The lecturer gave the example of the couple and said that if there was better understanding between the couple at that moment in their life then an incident of that nature would not have taken place. The male partner would know that his female partner would never say something like that and even if she does then maybe in light humour. This was an ideal example of misconception in interpersonal communication (West and Turner, 2010). The relationship of a newly engaged couple is very delicate as both the partners try to make maximum effort in trying to understand each other. It is also a testing time when a partner tests the patience, attitude, behaviour and other characteristics of his or her counterpart. It is very important to select the words in order to create and affect the attitude, behaviour and perception. Words once spilled out from the mouth can never be taken back no matter how sweet or bitter they are. I do not mean to tell you to be extra cautious while talking to one another. That is not good otherwise there will be more silence than talking. All that I am saying is that you two must be in control of your conversation rather than the conversation controls you. If one of you gets upset then the best way to handle the situation is by kindly talking it over rather than spilling out rude words or showing body language that is not appropriate. Study On The Student Athlete English Language Essay Being a student athlete is one of the hardest things there is to do. You find yourself having to make to make two full time commitments, one to your professors who expects you to fully commit yourself to the classroom and one to your coach who expects you to fully commit yourself to your sport. There is no remorse in the life of a student athlete, neither professor nor coach cares if youre too tired trying to balance the two in your life. If you spent all night studying for a class your coach is not going to let you sleep in and if you spent all day working on your sport your professor wont give you any slack. Aside from being a tough life to live there are many benefits to being a college students athlete as well. Sports teach lifelong skills that have extreme value and cannot be learned outside of sports. Also being a student athlete forces you to be so busy that you dont have time to get in trouble like other college students may. Being a student athlete means much more than what its shown to be, you learn critical life lessons through your sport, you learn to deal with stress on a different level and you become bonded to your team like a family. A college team is always changing; especially at the community college level you only see a big part of the team for only a year before they move on to a four year. At the beginning of the season you look to most of these players as just a group of guys of even your competition for your position. But as you progress through the off season your look upon these men changes, instead of your competition you see a team all striving for the same goal. Eventually this team isnt just as team but becomes a family. When your teammate is out of the field and youre not you clinch your teeth for them to make the play instead of fail which could give you a chance to play. At practice you push youre hardest to force the only players to do the same. When a whole team achieves this it creates something special, a team destine for greatness. Being a student athlete can bring a lot of stress causing them to lose concentration in both school and their sport. Stress can be a major problem that can eventually cause a student to not only quit in their sport, but also drop out of school all together. Being a student athlete causes more stress than typically any other reasoning for a college student to be stressed. For example when an athlete has a game coming up and a big project due the same night it will cause a lot stress. The one way that a student athlete can avoid having this type of stress is finishing their school work ahead of time, so they can relax after the game. This strain can also cause an athlete to stop doing a sport completely for a little while and entirely focus on their school. Theres nothing wrong with doing that, but stopping a sport for any time period will interrupt the growth of an athletes skill in their sport. Having good time management could be a determining factor of winning a State Championship or not for the team. Its granted that no athlete wants to be the one that ruins winning a State Championship just because they dont plan in advance. If a student athlete is in a sport that is individual such as tennis or golf this can cause even more stress due to the amount of pressure the sport causes alone. The goal to being a good student athlete is to have time management and not be a procrastinator. An athlete must also have good valued characteristics because in most case they are looked upon as role models. When a student goes to college they will develop into the adult they want to be in the future. Being in a sport while in college can give that student some of the respectable characteristics that they will need in the future. Bob Richards once said One of the great lessons Ive learned in athletics is that youve got to discipline your life. No matter how good you may be, youve got to be willing to cut out of your life those things that keep you from going to the top. Being an athlete means you must know what will help you move forward and what will take you back and remove what will take you back. Being an athlete also gives you leadership qualities that cant be learned elsewhere because you are placed into situations where quick decisions must be made. Athletes also have good respect towards others otherwise they would get punished in their sports for having disrespect. Being an athlete or not everybody probably agrees that having to run for being disrespectful is unquestionably not worth it. Student athletes are usually respected by others because they understand how the athletes have to work hard and are always strong-minded to succeed. Most people believe the idea that college is the time for messing around and discovering yourself, especially in the life of student athletes. The college athlete has been given this reputation of jocks only playing and partying. This is very untrue, the student athlete must strive for excellence of the field and still manage to do all their homework and school work. Regardless of how tough all the school work is, I believe everyone deserves to have a college experience outside the classroom. Some believe that student Athletes lead a different college experience than a normal student. As a college student athlete myself, I have come to learn that I am going to need to work twice as hard to be able to receive good grades while earning my degree along with balancing my time consuming baseball career. While I am trying to balance all of these things I am also going to try to be adjusting to the living circumstances and other situations the college life decided to throw at me. All college students tolerate and encounter some of the same situations. The college life is a huge change from life in high school. In college students usually move away from the comfort of their homes and no longer live under the protection of their parents. Most student athletes like myself have always been juggling their school work and sports as long as they can remember. Because Ive always had a sport to go along with school Ive never had the chance to be as full time student. In high school I was always playing a sport or dedicating my time to become better in one. It gives a student an unfair advantage over student athletes because they can spend this time becoming a better student. Although, there are many issues college students and college student athletes share, there are also a lot of problems they do not. Life can be stressful at times for every college student, but your normal college students have additional time to deal with whatever problems that occur. From witness ing college students around me, I have come to the assumption that all college students will sleep as much as they can. In most cases this would mean sleeping until you have to attend class, which most likely starts around nine for most students. Your standard course load for a typical college student is around fifteen units, which averages around ten to twelve hours a week. Once a college student attends all of his or her classes for the day they are usually free to do whatever they desire. With this extra free time the student has, it is mostly devoted to their social life. Since there normally is a good amount of extra time on the college students life they can usually have a pretty decent social life outside of school. The life of a college student athlete is structured closely to a normal students life but has much more added on top. Although, your typical class normally starts around nine or eight, most athletes are required to have to be up much earlier for study hall and/or practice depending on the sport. Not being able to sleep in very much in the mornings, I celebrate when I have a class at ten and I can go home after study hall or lifting and sleep for that extra hour. After school is over for the day, a college student athlete is rarely free to do what they wish; the majority of the time, there is either practice or games to be attended too. After a long day of class and practice you get to finally go home and do homework and study. With all of their time dedicated to the sport they play, the majority of college student athletes dont have much of a social life separate from their teammates. While most of an athletes close friends are their teammates, it feels more as if a family than just simply friends. Throughout the chaotic schedules of athletes, they can still find some spare time to socialize with other friends. The difference is that every student athlete has a target on their back and constantly has eyes watching them so they must be very cautious of what they do outside of school. Being a student athlete is hard but college can still be fun. Nothing helps clear a writers block more than going outside and throwing a baseball to clear my head. It is still unsure if student athletes or regular college students party and get in trouble more. But what I am sure of is that a student athlete will run a whole lot quick when the police come because of the fear of having to face the consequences from their coaches. The truth of the matter is college is no breeze for anyone student; college as a whole is a lot of hard work and commitment. The majority of student athletes have respect, are good leaders, and are very passionate about their school work and their sport. I personally believe the life of a student athlete can be more difficult in some parts than it is for college students but the life lessons you learn from being an athlete can never be learned anywhere else. The Oppressed People of Burma Burma, like many other Southeast Asian nations, is a land of much culture and diversity of ethnic groups. Unfortunately, unlike the people of other nations, the people of Burma have been stripped of their human rights. Since the military junta had overtaken the Burmese government in 1988, the people of Burma have been among the most oppressed people in the world. The continuation of the government’s brutality has caught the attention of many outside nations around the world who increasingly have been intervening in Burma’s issues to help its people. As these occurrences are a major issue for the people of Burma, these problems are not restricted to its boundaries. They are also becoming a problem for some of Burma’s neighboring countries such as Thailand. With a quick look at current events, it is clear that the oppression of the native people in Burma is still in its most intensive state. But first, an introduction of Burma’s background will spark interest as to how a culturally rich country could turn into a land full of people in search of their basic human right -- freedom. Burma is considered the land of rice and teak wood, in addition to its being rich in many other natural resources. The official language is Burmese and the major religions include Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam. A population of 49.5 million inhabits the land, in a 261,789 square mile area. The ethnic composition consists of the Burmans, the Shans, the Karns, the Mons, the Chins, the Kachins, as well as a significant population of Indians and Chinese who have migrated from their respective homelands. â€Å"A billion-dollar code?† Midge snickered, accompanying Brinkerhoff back up the hallway. â€Å"That's a good one.† â€Å"I swear it,† he said. She eyed him askance. â€Å"This better not be some ploy to get me out of this dress.† â€Å"Midge, I would never-† he said self-righteously. â€Å"I know, Chad. Don't remind me.† Thirty seconds later, Midge was sitting in Brinkerhoff's chair and studying the Crypto report. â€Å"See?† he said, leaning over her and pointing to the figure in question. â€Å"This MCD? A billion dollars!† Midge chuckled. â€Å"It does appear to be a touch on the high side, doesn't it?† â€Å"Yeah.† He groaned. â€Å"Just a touch.† â€Å"Looks like a divide-by-zero.† â€Å"A who?† â€Å"A divide-by-zero,† she said, scanning the rest of the data. â€Å"The MCD's calculated as a fraction-total expense divided by number of decryptions.† â€Å"Of course.† Brinkerhoff nodded blankly and tried not to peer down the front of her dress. â€Å"When the denominator's zero,† Midge explained, â€Å"the quotient goes to infinity. Computers hate infinity, so they type all nines.† She pointed to a different column. â€Å"See this?† â€Å"Yeah.† Brinkerhoff refocused on the paper. â€Å"It's today's raw production data. Take a look at the number of decryptions.† Brinkerhoff dutifully followed her finger down the column. NUMBER OF DECRYPTIONS = 0 Midge tapped on the figure. â€Å"It's just as I suspected. Divide-by-zero.† Brinkerhoff arched his eyebrows. â€Å"So everything's okay?† She shrugged. â€Å"Just means we haven't broken any codes today. TRANSLTR must be taking a break.† â€Å"A break?† Brinkerhoff looked doubtful. He'd been with the director long enough to know that â€Å"breaks† were not part of his preferred modus operandi-particularly with respect to TRANSLTR. Fontaine had paid $2 billion for the code-breaking behemoth, and he wanted his money's worth. Every second TRANSLTR sat idle was money down the toilet. â€Å"Ah†¦ Midge?† Brinkerhoff said. â€Å"TRANSLTR doesn't take any breaks. It runs day and night. You know that.† She shrugged. â€Å"Maybe Strathmore didn't feel like hanging out last night to prepare the weekend run. He probably knew Fontaine was away and ducked out early to go fishing.† â€Å"Come on, Midge.† Brinkerhoff gave her disgusted look. â€Å"Give the guy a break.† It was no secret Midge Milken didn't like Trevor Strathmore. Strathmore had attempted a cunning maneuver rewriting Skipjack, but he'd been caught. Despite Strathmore's bold intentions, the NSA had paid dearly. The EFF had gained strength, Fontaine had lost credibility with Congress, and worst of all, the agency had lost a lot of its anonymity. There were suddenly housewives in Minnesota complaining to America Online and Prodigy that the NSA might be reading their E-mail-like the NSA gave a damn about a secret recipe for candied yams. Strathmore's blunder had cost the NSA, and Midge felt responsible-not that she could have anticipated the commander's stunt, but the bottom line was that an unauthorized action had taken place behind Director Fontaine's back, a back Midge was paid to cover. Fontaine's hands-off attitude made him susceptible; and it made Midge nervous. But the director had learned long ago to stand back and let smart people do their jobs; that's exactly how he handled Trevor Strathmore. â€Å"Midge, you know damn well Strathmore's not slacking,† Brinkerhoff argued. â€Å"He runs TRANSLTR like a fiend.† Midge nodded. Deep down, she knew that accusing Strathmore of shirking was absurd. The commander was as dedicated as they came-dedicated to a fault. He bore the evils of the world as his own personal cross. The NSA's Skipjack plan had been Strathmore's brainchild-a bold attempt to change the world. Unfortunately, like so many divine quests, this crusade ended in crucifixion. â€Å"Okay,† she admitted, â€Å"so I'm being a little harsh.† â€Å"A little?† Brinkerhoff eyes narrowed. â€Å"Strathmore's got a backlog of files a mile long. He's not about to let TRANSLTR sit idle for a whole weekend.† â€Å"Okay, okay.† Midge sighed. â€Å"My mistake.† She furrowed her brow and puzzled why TRANSLTR hadn't broken any codes all day. â€Å"Let me double-check something,† she said, and began flipping through the report. She located what she was looking for and scanned the figures. After a moment she nodded. â€Å"You're right, Chad. TRANSLTR's been running full force. Raw consumables are even a little on the high side; we're at over half a million kilowatt-hours since midnight last night.† â€Å"So where does that leave us?† Midge was puzzled. â€Å"I'm not sure. It's odd.† â€Å"You want to rerun the data?† She gave him a disapproving stare. There were two things one never questioned about Midge Milken. One of them was her data. Brinkerhoff waited while Midge studied the figures. â€Å"Huh.† She finally grunted. â€Å"Yesterday's stats look fine: 237 codes broken. MCD, $874. Average time per code, a little over six minutes. Raw consumables, average. Last code entering TRANSLTR-† She stopped. â€Å"What is it?† â€Å"That's funny,† she said. â€Å"Last file on yesterday's queue log ran at 11:37 p.m.† â€Å"So?† â€Å"So, TRANSLTR breaks codes every six minutes or so. It's queue time was 23:37:08-but it lists no decrypt time.† Midge fumbled with the sheets. â€Å"Yesterday or today!† Brinkerhoff shrugged. â€Å"Maybe those guys are running a tough diagnostic.† Midge shook her head. â€Å"Eighteen hours tough?† She paused. â€Å"Not likely. We should call Strathmore.† â€Å"At home?† Brinkerhoff swallowed. â€Å"On a Saturday night?† â€Å"No,† Midge said. â€Å"If I know Strathmore, he's on top of this. I'll bet good money he's here. Look at this. Talk about long hours-he went in yesterday morning bright and early, and his elevator hasn't budged since. I'm showing no magno-card use for him on the main door. These calamities have affected their economies and trade with other countries, not to mention the financial burden afflicting farmers. Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), more commonly known as Mad Cow Disease, is a degenerative brain disease that affects cattle. The symptoms of BSE include loss of coordination, a staggering gait, difficulty in rising, a decrease in milk production, weight loss and eventually death. Animals that have BSE also present a change in behavior such as nervousness, aggression, and a diminished interest in surroundings. The incubation period is approximately from two to eight years. In November 1986, Mad Cow Disease was first identified and by early 2001 there were more than 180,000 cases in the United Kingdom. Studies suggest that more animals had been infected but most were slaughtered before being diagnosed or symptoms developed. Cases have been confirmed in other countries within Europe, including Denmark, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Belgium, The Netherlands, Portugal, and Switzerland. There have also been reports of BSE in Oman, Canada, and the Falkland Islands, however, these cases have been confined to cows imported from Britain. The disease has not been officially established in the United States, yet in March 2001 the American government apprehended around 300 sheep from farms located in Vermont that had been imported from Belgium and The Netherlands. BSE has been linked to a form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) which is a fatal brain disease in humans. Those infected present similar symptoms as the cattle infected. Lab Observation essays While observing the lab at DeVry in room 128 I have been able to give an observation on the room layout. There are 128 computers in the lab while the carpet color is mixed with blue, gray, violet, and tan. There are 4 printers in which everyone shares. The windows on the east side of the lab are facing the outdoors were the students are able to look out if they choose. The north wall has an entrance to the lab assistants office. The south wall does not have anything but a bulletin board with nothing posted on it. There are two doors to come in and out of the lab both on the west side of the lab. The room is bright because it has plenty of lights. I can hear students talking about their assignments that they are working. I can also hear quite a bit of typing going on in the lab. The lab smells like a doctors office to me. Everyone in the lab has his or her own kind of responsibility. The lab assistants responsibility is to assist anyone that is having technical difficulties with their computer or printer. In my observation it seems to me as if they are trying to hide most of the time. One of the assistants are working on the computer doing homework while the other two are in the back of their office talking. The teachers responsibilities is to make sure that the students know their curriculum and if they do not to put them back on track. Most of the teachers that I see are doing this by walking around the students in their class and observing them or asking them if they need some sort of assistance on the project that they are working on. The teachers are also being somewhat sociable which I fell is a good thing that they are able to interact with their students. The students responsibility is to know their assignment and to do that assignment correctly.
